Rank is a decision — where it appears

The observation that a numerical rank is a threshold applied to singular values rather than a property a matrix has. The gap either side of the cut is what says whether the integer was read off or chosen, and it belongs beside the integer.

A graph arrives as vertices and edges. Two different matrices can be built from it, they answer different questions, and one of them has a null vector that is exact — the only object on this site whose kernel is known before anything runs.

The vector that has to be rounded

A spectral partition is an eigenvector, and an eigenvector is a real vector. The answer wanted is a subset. Something has to turn one into the other, and the something is a heuristic applied after the linear algebra has finished.

Twenty-four numbers — values of a transfer function at twenty-four points — produce a sixth-order model of a forty-state system that passes through every sample to 10⁻¹² and matches the function it never saw to 10⁻⁹. Noise of 10⁻¹⁰ on those numbers takes the rank decision's gap from 10⁸ to 4.
